Where Can Boating Qualifications Take You?

Where Can Yacht and Power Boat Qualifications Take You?

For some, boating is simply a relaxing way to escape reality for the weekend; for others it’s all about the thrill and excitement of racing. At Ocean Sports Tuition, we are lucky enough to have turned our favourite hobbies into a career. If this sounds too good to be true, we’re here to tell you that it is far more of a possibility than you may think. In fact, our courses can be specifically tailored to help you to develop a career in the marine industry.

So, where could our training courses and commercial endorsements take you?

Chance to Travel the World

The simple answer is almost anywhere! Marinas all around the world are filled with thousands of yachts that require crew to run on a daily basis. Whether this is newly qualified or highly experienced individuals for sailing or power boats, there is no shortage of positions available. Whilst having a qualification isn’t essential, in order to win a position on some of the more sought-after boats, you will have an advantage if you have completed RYA training.

Whilst qualifications are not a legal requirement in the UK, other areas around the world require a minimum level of qualification in order to run a yacht. Dependent on the size and location of the yacht, RYA Day Skipper qualification may be sufficient. However, for larger vessels, it may be necessary to hold the RYA Yachtmaster offshore or ocean certificate. In Europe, the minimum level of competence required by law is the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

If you are looking to travel further afield, you may want to consider branching out from racing or cruising to delivery trips. Rather than shipping personal or commercial vessels, many boat owners choose to use a delivery crew to sail or motor the journey instead. Whether this is from Antigua to Rhode Island, or the UK to France, this is a great way to see the world whilst earning a living.

Teaching the Next Generation

If you’re looking to give something back and spread your love of the water, you may want to consider a career as an instructor or coach. You may opt to become a Powerboat Instructor teaching powerboat Level 2 Courses, or instead focus on helping the next generation of sailor to become a qualified coastal skipper.

No matter what route you choose to take, Ocean Sports Tuition offer a range of theory and practical courses at our RYA approved training centre to help you become a qualified instructor. We will advise you on the best courses to attend to support your training and the most suitable route – whether that may be a week-long crash course, or a single weekend examination. We can also offer you guidance on additional qualifications that may help to support your training and progress your career.
