The RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment is essential to complete prior to starting the instructor training course.

Before you can start your RYA Powerboat Instructor Course, you must be assessed for your proficiency in handling a boat, as well as your knowledge and understanding of the Powerboat Level 2 syllabus.

As you will need to be able to teach others how to safely and competently handle a powerboat, it’s a chance to demonstrate that you have these abilities following RYA’s standards and best practice.

This is an opportunity to demonstrate a deep level of proficiency in the practical and theory of handling a powerboat, before taking part in the RYA Powerboat Instructor Course.

OUTLINE COURSE CONTENT

OUTLINE COURSE CONTENT

During the assessment, candidates will need to demonstrate they are competent in, but not limited to, the below:

  • Hold off a mark
  • Pick up and secure to a mooring buoy
  • Moor alongside up/downtide
  • Turn using warps
  • Turn in a confined space
  • Recover a man overboard
  • Stop and start the engine
  • Planing speed runs including figure 8 and ‘U’ turns
  • Distress signals
  • Safety equipment
  • IRPCS
  • Sources of weather information
  • Hull shapes and engine types
  • Tidal heights
  • Basic chart work & electronic navigation
  • Theory including charts, tides, buoyage, colregs and pilotage

The RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment is £150 per person (inc. VAT).

If the assessment is booked alongside our Powerboat Instructor Course, it is reduced to £75 per person (inc. VAT).
