RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Academy

Here at Ocean Sports Tuition we are passionate about helping you realise your boating ambitions. That’s why we launched our RYA MCA Yachtmaster Academy. It focuses on taking our existing passion and capabilities and combining them in a complete package for our clients.

This flexible 4 week programme is designed to aid completion of your RYA Yachtmaster coastal qualification, as this is now the entry route for OOW yachts less than 3000GT.

You can also include STCW, VHF Short Range Certificate and PPR if needed. This comprehensive service is ideal for professional seafarers who require qualifications for a career at sea. Additionally, it is well suited to sailors looking to challenge themselves in a recreational setting. You choose which elements are best for you, by attending the relevant sections.

On successful completion of Ocean Sports Tuition Yachtmaster Coastal Academy you will have all you need to start or to continue your career in the superyacht industry.

Yachtmaster Academy

Week 1

The first week is a theory week with the Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper Theory Course. This is often a major reason for exam failure in our experience, however it is often overlooked. Often this course is ideal to brush up or to really polish your skills. Attending this course also gives the chance to really get to know your strengths and weaknesses. As a result, we can help and guide you in the right areas of your learning. It also gives you chance to meet your fellow crew members. By building that bond, you therefore develop the familiarity and trust to help gain confidence. Whilst this isn’t compulsory, we find it massively advantageous to the success of our candidates.

Weekend 1

The weekend will be taken up by the last day exams of your RYA Yachtmaster coastal course and VHF licence if needed.

Yachtmaster Academy

Week 2

Is the RYA Coastal Skipper practical week, the main advantage to this week is that it really cements the theory knowledge, build news skills and fine tunes old ones, it also lowers the required millage required before undertaking your RYA MCA Yachmaster Coastal Skipper exam.  The required millage for the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal exam is: 800 miles 30 days 12 nights hours, 2 days as skipper, however with this course you will only require 400 miles, 20 days and 2 days as skipper onboard a vessel of less than 24 meters.

The MCA have also agreed that millage on vessels up to 3000GT can also be used, as long as candidates have undertaken the RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate.

This is an intensive, personally focused week of skills and drills putting everything together and allowing you to practice the finer points of boat handling, planning, navigation, crew management and decision making. Consequently, by the end of this course you will have all the attributes of a great Yachtmaster.
