The RYA MCA Advanced Powerboat Prep and Exam is for those who have decided to turn your passion of powerboating into a profession. Is the RYA MCA Advanced Powerboat Exam right course for me?
This course is for those wishing to become a Commercial Powerboat Skipper. This course is a preparation course, therefore it will provide you with the skills and knowledge for the RYA/MCA exam.
Do I need previous experience?
Yes, required experience and entry requirements include:
- Minimum age 18
- VHF Radio Certificate
- A First Aid Certificate
- Navigation Knowledge to RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal level
The RYA also recommends that candidates have the following experience:
- 30 days at sea
- 800 miles
- 12 night hours
- 2 days as skipper
- If you have attended a two day RYA Advanced Powerboat Course this is reduced to 20 days and 400 miles.
What will I learn?
The intensive 2 and 5 day preparation sessions revolve largely around planning the night exercises, plus the revision of key theory; secondary ports, tidal heights and rates, collision regulations, night lights and shapes, sound signals. It is an intensive program of instructor led revision which will prepare you specifically for the exam.
Here you will be asked to demonstrate night pilotage and navigation skills as well as boat handling and general theory. In addition to this, you will be expected to demonstrate your competency as a skipper.
On successful completion of this exam you will also need a RYA Sea Survival certificate ,VHF Radio Operators License, PPR certificate, First Aid certificate as well as an ML5 medical from your doctor to commercial endorse the certificate of competence.

Option one: For students with lots of practical and theory knowledge and experience.
Two afternoons and one night session led by an instructor. This is followed by an afternoon and night session with an examiner.
Option two: This is aimed at students who may need more in the way of preparation plus theory instruction. This consists of five days preparation, including at least 4 night sessions. This is also followed by an afternoon and night session with an examiner.

All prices exclude the RYA examination fee which is currently £200. This can be paid online via the RYA exam payment portal.
