RYA Powerboat Instructor vs Advanced Instructor: Which Do You Need?

Understanding the Instructor Pathway and Progression Options

If you’re considering a career in powerboat instruction, understanding the difference between RYA Powerboat Instructor and Advanced Powerboat Instructor is essential for planning your career pathway. This guide explains what each qualification allows you to teach, the requirements for each, and how to decide which route is right for you.

RYA Powerboat Instructor: The Foundation

What You Can Teach

The standard RYA Powerboat Instructor qualification enables you to teach:

RYA Powerboat Level 1: A one-day introduction course for beginners, typically younger students aged 8-12.

RYA Powerboat Level 2: The flagship two-day course that forms the foundation of recreational powerboating competence. This is the most popular course in the entire RYA scheme.

RYA Safety Boat: A two-day course for those supporting racing or teaching activities (only if you hold the Safety Boat certificate yourself).

ICC Assessment: Assessing candidates for the International Certificate of Competence.

Requirements

To become a Powerboat Instructor, you need:

Minimum age 18. RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate. Valid RYA-approved First Aid certificate. Five seasons of logged experience (or one season full-time equivalent). Pass the skills assessment. RYA membership.

Course Duration

The RYA Powerboat Instructor Course is three days, plus the one-day skills assessment.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor: The Next Level

What You Can Teach

The Advanced Powerboat Instructor qualification enables you to teach:

RYA Intermediate Powerboat: A two-day course developing day cruising skills and introducing longer passages.

RYA Advanced Powerboat: The pinnacle of the powerboat scheme, including night navigation, advanced pilotage, and passage planning in challenging conditions.

Advanced Instructors can also teach all the courses that standard Powerboat Instructors teach.

Requirements

The Advanced Powerboat Instructor qualification has more demanding prerequisites:

Valid RYA Powerboat Instructor qualification. RYA Advanced Powerboat Course completion certificate. One of: Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence, RYA Yachtmaster Coastal (Power), or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power). Commercial Endorsement (Advanced Instructors without CE can only teach Intermediate, not Advanced). Valid First Aid certificate. Logged teaching hours as a Powerboat Instructor. Health declaration or medical questionnaire.

Course Duration

The Advanced Powerboat Instructor course is two days plus one evening (including a night exercise conducted in darkness).

Key Differences

Teaching Scope

The fundamental difference is what you’re qualified to teach. Standard Instructors teach the entry-level courses (Level 1 and 2); Advanced Instructors teach the higher-level courses (Intermediate and Advanced).

Experience Requirements

Advanced Instructor requires you to already be a qualified and practising Powerboat Instructor with logged teaching experience. You can’t skip straight to Advanced Instructor.

Additional Qualifications Needed

Advanced Instructor requires you to hold either the Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence or a Yachtmaster qualification (power). For full Advanced teaching scope, you also need a Commercial Endorsement.

Career Implications

Standard Powerboat Instructor qualifies you for most entry-level instructor positions. Advanced Instructor opens doors to more specialised roles and typically commands higher rates.

Which Should You Pursue?

Start with Powerboat Instructor If…

You’re new to instruction. You want to teach Level 2 courses (the most common demand). You want to gain experience before committing to advanced training. You don’t yet hold Advanced Powerboat or Yachtmaster qualifications.

Progress to Advanced Instructor If…

You’re already working as a Powerboat Instructor. You want to teach advanced courses including night navigation. You hold (or are working towards) Advanced Powerboat or Yachtmaster qualifications. You want to maximise your employability and earning potential. You’re interested in eventually becoming a Powerboat Trainer.

The Progression Pathway

Most instructors follow a progression over time:

1. Gain experience and obtain Powerboat Level 2

2. Complete Powerboat Instructor Course

3. Teach Level 1 and Level 2 courses, building experience

4. Complete Intermediate and Advanced Powerboat courses as a student

5. Obtain Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence (commercial exam)

6. Complete Advanced Powerboat Instructor Course

7. Teach the full range of powerboat courses

This progression typically takes several years, allowing you to develop genuine expertise at each level before moving up.
