What Can You Teach as an RYA Powerboat Instructor?

Understanding the Scope of Your Instructor Qualification

Once you’ve completed your RYA Powerboat Instructor training, what exactly are you qualified to teach? Understanding the scope of your qualification helps you find employment opportunities and plan your career development. This guide explains what you can teach as a qualified RYA Powerboat Instructor and how to make the most of your qualification.

Core Teaching Scope

As a qualified RYA Powerboat Instructor, you can teach the following courses at any RYA Recognised Training Centre:

RYA Powerboat Level 1

This one-day introductory course is designed primarily for younger students (typically aged 8-12) who want their first taste of powerboating under supervision. You’ll teach basic boat handling, safety awareness, and simple manoeuvres.

Level 1 provides an excellent introduction to powerboating for juniors who aren’t quite ready for the full Level 2 syllabus. It’s a confidence-building course that creates a pathway into the sport.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

The flagship course of the RYA Powerboat scheme, Level 2 is a two-day course teaching students to handle a powerboat safely and competently. This is the most commonly taught course in the scheme and forms the majority of most instructors’ teaching workload.

The Level 2 syllabus covers:

Pre-departure checks and boat preparation. Slow-speed handling and close-quarters manoeuvring. High-speed handling and planing. Coming alongside and departing from pontoons. Man overboard recovery. Anchoring. Securing to a buoy. Basic navigation and chart reading. Safety equipment and emergency procedures.

As the instructor, you’ll teach both practical skills afloat and theory elements ashore, assessing students continuously throughout the two days.

RYA Safety Boat Course

If you hold the RYA Safety Boat certificate yourself, you can also teach this two-day course. The Safety Boat course trains powerboat drivers to support racing and training activities, covering rescue techniques, towing, and fleet management.

This is popular with sailing clubs, windsurfing centres, and anywhere that needs safety cover for water activities.

Additional Assessments

ICC Assessment

As a Powerboat Instructor, you can assess candidates for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for power vessels up to 10 metres. This is valuable for students who need the ICC for overseas charter but don’t wish to complete a full course.

Where You Can Teach

Your RYA Powerboat Instructor qualification is recognised worldwide. You can teach at:

RYA Recognised Training Centres in the UK: Hundreds of centres across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

RYA Recognised Training Centres overseas: The RYA network extends to over 50 countries, including popular destinations in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and beyond.

Working Arrangements

Most new instructors work under the supervision of a Principal or Chief Instructor at an established centre. This supervision requirement is part of the qualification – you’re not able to set up independently and issue RYA certificates without being part of a recognised centre.

Common working arrangements include:

Employed positions: Salaried roles at training centres, activity centres, or corporate operations.

Freelance work: Day-rate work for one or more centres, offering flexibility.

Seasonal contracts: Working the summer season at UK centres or following the sun to Mediterranean or Caribbean locations.

What You Cannot Teach

It’s equally important to understand the limitations of your qualification:

Intermediate Powerboat: Requires Advanced Powerboat Instructor qualification.

Advanced Powerboat: Requires Advanced Powerboat Instructor qualification with Commercial Endorsement.

Motor Cruising courses (Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper): Requires Cruising Instructor qualification.

PWC/Jet Ski courses: Requires PWC Instructor qualification.

Expanding Your Teaching Scope

If you want to teach beyond Level 2, consider these progression routes:

Advanced Powerboat Instructor

The Advanced Powerboat Instructor Course enables you to teach Intermediate and Advanced Powerboat courses. This requires additional qualifications and experience as a Powerboat Instructor.

Other Instructor Qualifications

Many instructors hold multiple qualifications, allowing them to teach across different schemes. Consider adding PWC Instructor, Cruising Instructor, or theory teaching qualifications to broaden your scope.

Making the Most of Your Qualification

Build Your Reputation

Focus on delivering excellent courses consistently. Student feedback and word-of-mouth recommendations are valuable for building your career.

Stay Current

Your certificate is valid for five years, requiring revalidation. Stay active in teaching and keep up with any changes to the syllabus or teaching methods.

Network

Build relationships with centre principals and fellow instructors. Much work comes through personal connections.

Consider Additional Qualifications

Supporting qualifications like VHF Radio and First Aid enhance your value to employers.
