Becoming a Powerboat Instructor

powerboat training - grey rib with men in full waterproofs travelling at speed

If you’ve spent years honing your powerboat skills and have become something of a pro, now is the time to take the next step. Becoming a Powerboat Instructor will give you the opportunity to impart your skills to aspiring powerboaters. It is also a fantastic introduction to a career in watersports.

What do you need to become an instructor?

The Powerboat Instructor Course covers a wide range of skills. It will equip you with the skills to coach your pupils to achieve their Powerboat Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications. To qualify for the Powerboat Instructor course, you must have completed an RYA Powerboat skills assessment. This is your proof that you are already a confident powerboater, able to manoeuvre a powerboat competently through a series of exercises at both high and low speeds.

Time to hit the water!

Once you’ve proved that you are cool as a cucumber behind the wheel, it’s time to develop your teaching skills. The RYA Powerboat Instructor Course spans over 3 days during which you will teach your peers a variety of drills. This is often a particularly difficult part of the course, as you must treat them as though they are novices. It’s a fantastic opportunity to hone your teaching style in a safe environment without the pressure of the real scenario! But be sure to take this time seriously too. The entire course is designed to turn you into a fully-rounded Powerboat Instructor, as well as being assessed throughout. There’s no time for slacking!

Learning in the classroom

In addition to the practical sessions, you will also get to test your ability to teach in the classroom. This can often be one of the most daunting parts of the Powerboat Instructor Course, but it also has the potential to be one of the most interesting and engaging. It is fascinating to see other people’s teaching techniques and helps enormously in developing your own style. One of the hardest parts of transitioning from competent powerboater to Powerboat Instructor is understanding how to pass on your knowledge and experience to your pupils. Our coaches that run the RYA Powerboat Instructor Course have many years under their belt teaching a range of courses. They have seen it all, so make the most of this time to learn from them all you can. Equally, the other people on the course with you will have different approaches and this can also be invaluable to your own training.

There’s something for everyone

Every person on the course will be there for different reasons, with different levels of experience. Whether you’re a university student looking for a fun summer job to take you abroad or a parent who is looking to teach courses as a volunteer at your local sailing club, this course offers something for everyone.
