At Ocean Sports Tuition we are proud to offer a comprehensive variety of RYA courses, from Day Skipper to our Yachtmaster Academy, to help your crewing application stand out from the crowd.
Due to the popularity of these roles, skippers are much more likely to hire crew who have completed training to at least STCW 95 Basic Training level. On completion of this course, you can apply for your International Certificate of Competence (ICC) up to 24 metres, which will be needed if you are crewing in European waters.
For complete beginners looking to dive into a career in crewing, our Start Yachting course is a great introduction to sailing and a perfect stepping stone to the RYA Competent Crew course. This 5-day course requires no experience and is for those who want to learn to be an active and confident part of the crew. This course is also a great way to determine whether crewing is the right career choice for you before setting off for months on a superyacht.
Whether you are looking to skipper yachts up to 24m, superyachts, or anything in between, our Yachtmaster Academy is the place to learn the ropes. Depending on the size of the craft and your destination, you will either require the Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence (skipper yachts up to 24m, operating up to 20 miles from a safe haven), or the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (skipper yachts up to 200gt, 150 miles from a safe haven).
Skippers will also be required to hold the commercial endorsement, and must undertake STCW basic training including sea survival and fire prevention. STCW 95 Basic Training is included in Week 4 of the Yachtmaster Academy course.

If you are looking for a career as a delivery skipper, intend to work freelance, or would like to work for a delivery company transferring yachts to various destinations worldwide, you will need strong experience on the water and within the industry. The nature of the passage and the destination of yacht delivery will affect the qualifications required, but generally it is recommended that the skipper holds the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.

Depending on your role, you will be required to have completed teaching courses such as the RYA Powerboat Instructor or Advanced Powerboat Instructor course, alongside a first aid course.
