Why You Need It and How to Obtain It
If you’re pursuing an RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor qualification, understanding the commercial endorsement is essential. Without it, your teaching scope is significantly limited. This guide explains what the commercial endorsement is, why it matters for instructors, and how to obtain it.
What is a Commercial Endorsement?
A commercial endorsement is an official stamp on your RYA Certificate of Competence indicating that you meet additional requirements for commercial operations. It confirms that you have completed safety training, undergone a medical assessment, and understand your professional responsibilities.
The endorsement is valid for five years and must be revalidated by demonstrating continued sea service and maintaining valid supporting certificates.
Why Do Advanced Instructors Need Commercial Endorsement?
For RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructors, the commercial endorsement determines which courses you can teach:
With Commercial Endorsement: You can teach the full range including Tender Operator, Intermediate, and Advanced Powerboat courses.
Without Commercial Endorsement: You can only teach the Intermediate Powerboat course. You cannot teach the Advanced Powerboat Course or Tender Operator Course.
This is because teaching the Advanced course involves taking students to sea in potentially challenging conditions, including night exercises. The Tender Operator course involves training superyacht crew who will operate commercially. Both scenarios require the instructor to meet commercial safety standards.
Which Certificates Can Be Commercially Endorsed?
To work as an Advanced Instructor teaching all courses, you need a commercial endorsement on one of the following Certificates of Competence:
RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal (Power) Certificate of Competence RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) Certificate of Competence
Note that course completion certificates (as opposed to Certificates of Competence) cannot generally be commercially endorsed, with one exception: Advanced Powerboat certificates issued before 1 January 2005 can receive commercial endorsement without requiring the exam.
Requirements for Commercial Endorsement
To obtain a commercial endorsement, you need:
Medical Fitness Certificate: Either an ML5 (valid for 5 years for those under 65) or ENG1 (valid for 2 years). The ML5 is less stringent and suitable for most instructors. The ENG1 is required for those working in Category 1 or 0 waters.
RYA Sea Survival Certificate: Complete the RYA Sea Survival Course, a one-day practical course covering life raft deployment, survival techniques, and emergency procedures.
RYA First Aid Certificate: A valid RYA First Aid certificate or equivalent approved qualification.
RYA VHF Radio Certificate: A valid Marine Radio SRC certificate or equivalent GMDSS qualification.
Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR): Complete the RYA’s online PPR course and assessment, covering your legal and professional responsibilities when working commercially.
The Application Process
Once you have all the required certificates, apply to the RYA for your commercial endorsement. You’ll need to submit your original Certificate of Competence, copies of your Sea Survival, First Aid, and VHF certificates, your medical fitness certificate, your PPR completion certificate, the application fee, and a recent passport-sized photograph.
Processing typically takes 2-3 weeks, after which your Certificate of Competence is returned with the commercial endorsement stamped on it.

Maintaining Your Commercial Endorsement
Commercial endorsements must be revalidated every five years. To revalidate, you need to demonstrate at least 150 days of sea service on appropriate vessels during the five-year period, maintain a valid medical fitness certificate, and keep your Sea Survival and First Aid certificates current (First Aid must be renewed every three years).
If you cannot demonstrate 150 days of sea service, you may be able to revalidate by showing that for at least half the five-year period you were employed in duties closely associated with vessel management and operation.
Planning Your Pathway
If you’re working towards Advanced Instructor, consider the commercial endorsement requirements early:
Step 1: Obtain your Advanced Powerboat Certificate.
Step 2: Pass the Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence exam to convert your course completion certificate to a CoC.
Step 3: Complete Sea Survival training and obtain your medical certificate.
Step 4: Apply for commercial endorsement.
Step 5: Complete the Advanced Powerboat Instructor Course.
This sequence ensures you arrive at your Advanced Instructor course with commercial endorsement already in place, ready to teach the full range of courses immediately upon qualifying.
