Why the Sea Survival Course can be a lifesaver

The name may sound like a budget action thriller, but Sea Survival is often a key first step for budding recreational and professional boaters alike; protecting you and the rest of your crew in an emergency.

But what does the Sea Survival course actually contain – and why is it so important?

What is the Sea Survival course?

RYA Sea Survival Course is a one-day course which trains you in basic procedures for handling emergency situations at sea. Topics covered include life jacket design, life rafts and the equipment they carry, survival techniques, medical first aid and advice for helping search and rescue teams locate you.

The course is a mixture of both theory and practical sessions. You’ll get to experience using life jackets and life rafts from the safety of an indoor swimming pool.

At the end of the course, you’ll receive a certificate of competency which will be endorsed by the Royal Yacht Association.

Why should I bother learning Sea Survival?

Accidents at sea are mercifully rare, and if you follow all the basic procedures for safe boat handling and navigation, you’re unlikely to find yourself needing your lifeboat any time soon.

That said, you should never underestimate the importance of emergency training. Cold waters and large, choppy waves are an unforgiving environment for the unprepared, and if anything does happen to you out on the water, the situation can turn ugly very quickly.

But with the knowledge and experience that the Sea Survival course provides, you’ll be able to deal with on-board emergencies proficiently and pragmatically – greatly increasing your chances of getting back to shore alive.

The Sea Survival qualification is also a must-have if you’re looking for a future career as a commercial skipper; not only will employers ask for it, but insurance firms won’t cover you without it.
