Which RYA powerboat course?

The RYA Powerboating scheme is for people wanting to skipper open boats up to 10 meters in length. Here we are looking at the main RYA Powerboat courses. The RYA also offer two specialist powerboat courses -The RYA Safety boat course and the RYA Tender operators course, more on these to come.

The RYA Powerboat scheme is aimed at leisure boaters aged from 8 upwards.

Beginner courses –

For children aged from 8 years, the RYA Powerboat level 1 course is the perfect starting platform. This one-day course is a great introduction to power boating. The course will teach young people or those that are just looking for a day on the water, how to launch and recover the boat safely and every day basic boat handling skills.

Many people see the RYA Powerboat level 2 as the national boat licence, this is perhaps because on completion of the RYA Powerboat level 2 course you can apply for your ICC, the licence required for international waters. This two day course is for anyone aged 12 upwards. You will learn close quarter manoeuvring, planing speed manoeuvres, man over board techniques and rules of the road.

The two day RYA Essential Seamanship & Navigation course is a great course to undertake after you have completed the RYA Powerboat level 2 course. The course is available online or in our classroom at Saxon wharf Marina. You will learn basic navigation, including tides and chart work and develop your safety knowledge.

Intermediate courses –

For skippers wanting to go a little further afield then the RYA Day Skipper theory course and the RYA Intermediate course is the perfect combination.

The RYA Day Skipper theory is a forty hour course and can be undertaken online or face to face in our classroom. On this course you will learn all the navigation necessary for cruising in your boat.

The two day practical RYA Intermediate Powerboat course is for students who want to navigate a powerboat on coastal passages by daytime.

Advanced courses –

The RYA Yachtmaster coastal theory is for serious skippers looking to take their powerboating to the next level and goes hand in hand with the RYA Advanced powerboat course. On completion of the RYA Advanced powerboat course you will be able to navigate a powerboat on coastal passages by day and night.
