RYA-MCA Commercial Skipper Course

Ocean Sports Tuition offers a full range of RYA courses packaged together for anyone wishing to pursue a career as a commercial skipper.

This course is aimed at clients wishing to gain the qualifications needed to drive open boats up to 24 meters commercially and 20 miles from a safe haven or those who that would just like to develop their personal skills to a professional level.

Ocean Sports Tuition realise that all clients are coming to us with different abilities and experience and are therefore offering this package in three phases.

Phase one – Getting on the water

Experience Builder Phase

Phase one – Getting on the water:

Is this the right course for me?

This is a great base course for all that are looking to carry on to the commercial phase and have little or no experience or for those that would like to gain some professional qualifications for personal boating.

Do I need previous experience?

No – this phase is aimed at complete beginners.

What will I learn?

  • RYA Powerboat level two
  • ICC assessment
  • RYA Intermediate Power boat

On completion of phase one you will be able to skipper an open boat on longer passages.

How long is the course?

The course duration is seven days.

How much is the course and what does it include?

The course cost is £835.00 per person and includes – moorings, all tuition, fuel and water proofs.
Accommodation can be provided, this is at a separate cost.

Phase 2 – Experience building Phase:

Is this the right course for me?

This phase is aimed at those who would like to gain more experience or those who would like to undertake the commercial exam and don’t have the prior experience to do so.

Do I need previous experience?

No – this is aimed at anyone who would like to gain more time on the water.

What will I learn?

Invaluable experience in different conditions in both daylight and night-time.

How long is the course and how many miles will I be able to log?

The phase duration is 12 days.

How much is the course and what does it include?

The course costs £3250.00 per person and includes tuition, fuel and moorings.
Shore based accommodation can be arranged for this course phase.

Phase 3 – Commercial Endorsement Phase:

Is this the right course for me?

This phase is aimed at students who want to obtain there RYA MCA Advanced power boat qualification.

Do I need previous experience?

You should have the knowledge and experience of phase one and at least twenty days on water.

What will I learn?

Three days shore based training learning key theory subjects such as – secondary ports, tidal heights and rates, collision regulations, night lights and shapes, sound signals. It is an intensive program of instructor led training which will prepare you specifically for the exam. Here you will be asked to demonstrate night pilotage and navigation skills as well as boat handling and general theory. In addition to this, you will be expected to demonstrate your competency as a skipper.
On successful completion of this exam you will also need an RYA Sea Survival certificate as well as an ML5 medical from your doctor.

How long is the course and how many mile will I be able to log?

The full course duration is five days.

How much is the course and what does it include?

This course costs £1295.00 per person and includes all moorings, fuel and expert tuition.

Accommodation can be arranged for you, there is an additional charge for this.
Other additional costs include – RYA exam fees, this was £181 at time of publishing.
