The RYA power boat scheme consists of five courses:

RYA level one power boat course, RYA Level two power boat course, RYA Safety boat course, RYA Intermediate power boat course and RYA Advanced power boat course.On completion of the RYA power boat level two course you can then attend an RYA safety boat course, this course is ideal if you are thinking of becoming an RYA windsurfing or dinghy instructor or would like to help out at the local sailing club on there safety boat.

If you are looking to go further afield or go out in more challenging conditions then the RYA Intermediate and RYA Advanced power boat courses are ideally suited to you. Which ever course you decide upton we will strive to offer you the best possible tuition and in the best possible enviroment.

RYA Powerboat  1 & 2


Is this the right course for me?


To give students an understanding of  power boating. This course focuses on boat handling & safety and includes elementary chart work.

Do I need previous experience?

No this course is Suitable for all students.

Students under 16 will  have their certificates endorsed as follows:  "To be under supervision of a responsible adult".

What will I learn?

The course will teach boat handling including -anchoring, securing to moorings,turning in confined spaces, coming alongside, man overboard techniques,knowledge of equipment, towing, high speed manoeuvres, rules of the road and pilotage and passage planning.


On completion of the course we can help you apply for your ICC (International Certificate of Competence), which is the license for other European countries.  Please be aware that the RYA charge a small fee for this service for non-RYA members.

RYA Powerboat Intermediate


Is this the right course for me?


Acquire the ability of planing and undertaking short coastal passages by day. This course develops your existing ability around safety and boat handling.

Do I need previous experience?

YES - RYA power boat level 2 (or equivalent experience)
 
The following courses will also help - VHF, First Aid and Day skipper theory.

Students must be 16 years of age.

 What will I learn?

Planning a cruise by day. Students will have the opportunity to participate in two cruises - one by traditional methods of navigation and the other by GPS.

Subjects will include; chart work, tides, compass rose, weather, position fixing, navigation by GPS, methods of navigation at high speed, 
pile moorings ,manoeuvring in locks and a range of man overboard methods.

Two Days.

This course is £285.00 per person, this will be group tuition or alternatively we also run this course on a one:one basis the cost of this is £575.00.

RYA Advanced Powerboat


Is this the right course for me?

The Advanced Powerboat course is for anyone who wants to develop their skills to a level whereby they can confidently venture further afield or deal with different or adverse conditions.

Do I need previous experience?

 

2 Days (0900 until late first Day & 0900 to 1600 on the second day).

 

What will I learn?

The course includes GPS navigation, improved boat handling skills, high-speed navigation, night navigation, rough weather handling, sector searches as well as going over all existing aspects of power boating.

 

How long is the course?

2 Days (0900 until late first Day & 0900 to 1600 on the second day).

How much is the course and what does it include?

This course is £325.00 per person, this will be group tuition or alternatively we also run this course on a one:one basis the cost of this is £650.00.

The price includes all moorings, waterproofs and expert tuition.

RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence Prep & Exam

Is this the right course for me?

On completion of an RYA advanced powerboat course students may wish to work commercially in this sector. This course is a preparation course for the RYA MCA exam.

Do I need previous experience?

  • Minimum age 18
  • VHF DCS
  • Valid First Aid
  • Navigation Knowledge to Day Skipper

The RYA also recommends that candidates have the following experience.

  • 30 days at sea
  • 800 miles
  • 12 night hours
  • 2 days as skipper 

If you have a attended two day Advanced Course  this is reduced to 20 days and 400 miles.

What will I learn?

The intensive day preparation sessions revolves largely around planning the night exercises plus the revision of key theory; secondary ports, tidal heights and rates, collision regulations, night lights and shapes, sound signals. It is an intensive programme of instructor led revision which will prepare you specifically for the exam.  Here you will be asked to demonstrate night pilotage and navigation skills as well as boat handling and general theory. In addition to this, you will be expected to demonstrate your competency as a skipper.

On successful completion of this exam you will also need an RYA Sea Survival certificate as well as an ML5 medical from your doctor.

How Long is the course?

Timings vary with the time of year. Two afternoons and two night sessions - lead by your instructor followed by an afternoon and night session, lead by an examiner.

How much is the course and what does it include?

This course is £435.00 per person, this will be group tuition or alternatively we also run this course on a one:one basis the cost of this is £850.00.

RYA examination fee £142 to be paid. This fee may vary but was correct as of September 2009.

What is own boat tuition?

To build knowledge, experience and confidence on your own boat.

Need I need previous experience?


No we can tailor these days to suit your needs and requirements - Both for experienced and inexperienced power boaters.

What will I learn?

Own Boat Tuition gives you the opportunity to learn at your own pace so we can lead you through any power boating skills completely tailored to your needs. You can learn with family, friends or if you prefer, on your own.  What is certain is that it can really enhance your ability to enjoy power boating and do so with confidence.  We will support you at all times and make sure that you get the most out of your experience. 

How much does it cost and how do I book?

Own boat tuition cost £195 per day, plus expenses. Maximum ratio is 1:3. Please
